The Cat and the Old Rat

A battle of wits between a theatrical cat and a wise, old rat. Discover this classic La Fontaine masterpiece of survival and intellect.

Once upon a time, in the cheese-scented pantry of a grand mansion, there lived an old, wise rat. Having seen through a thousand of the world’s tricks, he had survived countless traps, emerging each time not just with a shortened tail, but with a vast fortune of wisdom. He had become the undisputed master of the pantry; at the faintest rustle of cheese, he could instantly sense the iron jaw beneath it, and he read the silent language of creeping paws better than anyone else.

This pantry was also home to a cunning, shadow-dark cat who could outshine the finest stage actors, firmly believing that he practiced deceit as a high art. Seeing that the mice no longer dared to poke so much as a whisker out of their holes, he decided to put on a brand-new play. He climbed a thick wooden beam in the center of the pantry and smoothly hung himself upside down by his hind legs. Rolling his eyes back and letting his neck go limp, he began to sway like a lifeless pile of fur suspended from the wood.

The young, naive mice, whose stomachs had been empty of even a single crumb for days, were overjoyed at this magnificent sight. “The cruel hunter has met his doom!” they squeaked, dashing out of their holes in a frenzy of delight. As they danced and leaped in the middle of the pantry, savoring the sweet taste of freedom, the lifeless pile of fur suddenly sprang to life. The master actor, rather than waiting for his applause, let his unsheathed claws do the talking, gleefully reaping the harvest of his first act among the unsuspecting crowd.

Following this bitter lesson, the surviving mice retreated into the deepest, darkest corners of their holes, not daring to take a single step outside for days. Left without an audience, the cat decided to push the boundaries of his theatrical talents. He dove into a torn sack of flour, coating himself in stark white from head to paw. Then, he crept to the very center of the stone floor and laid dead still, perfectly resembling an innocently spilled mound of flour. With the confident air of “No one could possibly see through this flawless costume,” he held his breath and waited for his stark-white trap to spring.

Before long, a few young mice, dizzy with hunger, spotted that irresistible mound of flour. Twitching their whiskers, they prepared to take their first eager steps toward the feast. At that precise moment, the old rat with the severed tail quietly positioned himself at the mouth of the hole, blocking the passageway like an impenetrable wall. Smiling into his whiskers, he watched the rhythmic rise and fall of breath beneath that perfect white mound, and noted those erect, twitchy ears that the actor had somehow forgotten to powder.

Through the heavy silence of the pantry, the old rat’s deep, amused voice rang out:

“We haven’t quite forgotten that marvelous tragedy you performed hanging upside down from the ceiling, my dear maestro. And now, I am admiring your breathtaking performance beneath that white blanket. But do not tire yourself for nothing. Even if you were not merely a spilled mound of flour, but the flour sack itself, not a single spectator would step over this threshold for you.”

In the quiet of the pantry, the yellow eyes buried in the middle of that snowy mound opened in sheer disappointment. Realizing his grand finale had been ruined, the cat shook off the flour and stood up with a sulky scowl. Shooting a sour glare at the unshakeable, mocking wisdom behind the hole, he quietly melted into the shadows like a defeated actor exiting the stage. The old rat, meanwhile, gave his whiskers a satisfied twirl, relishing the sweet victory of intellect over cunning, and strolled back into the safe depths of his nest.
